The front of the bag says “real meat,” “supports healthy digestion,” “senior formula,” or “skin and coat support.”
Then you turn it around and find meat meal, by-products, animal fat, crude percentages, an AAFCO statement, and a long list of ingredients that may or may not mean what you think they mean.
So what should you actually pay attention to?
Enter your email below, and I’ll send you TWO free guides created by Dr. Angie Boyer of Grain & Grace Consulting to help you make more sense of your pet’s food label and ingredients.
Understanding the Pet Food Label: A simple sample label that shows you where to find the ingredient list, guaranteed analysis, AAFCO statement, feeding guidelines, manufacturer information, and other important details.
Reading My Pet Food Label: A practical guide to common protein, fat, and filler terminology, including meat versus meat meal, by-products, named and unnamed fat sources, functional ingredients, and what may actually be worth questioning.
You’ll also receive occasional emails from The Pet Parent Hotline with practical pet-care information, new episodes, and resources. No daily inbox invasion, and you can unsubscribe at any time.
These guides will not tell you that one ingredient automatically makes a food wonderful or terrible. They will help you understand what the words on the package mean, which claims need more context, and what questions to ask before choosing a food for your dog or cat.
